Default Stuck Muffler

Hey guys,

I took my old exhaust off and the rear muffler is stuck in the head pipe. I unbolted the head pipe from the cylinder and put new exhaust.

What can I do to take the muffler apart from the head pipe? I sprayed WD40 where both ends meet, without success.

Thanks!

It would be easier to get apart if it was still bolted to the bike. WD-40 doesn't work that great for that....PB blaster and I'm sure a few others work better. If you started spraying it while it while still riding the bike...the heat /cool cycles would help the penetrating oil get in there...after a few days of spraying you should be able to "wiggle it apart.

Heat the female end with a torch and let expansion loosen it.

Heat will do it, or take an old screw driver, push it under the "tangs" after you lift two the work the muffler up and down, it should come right off. Never had one fight me really hard.

I know I should have took it apart while it was on the bike. I don't have a torch so I'll try the screwdriver.

I found that silicone spray lube and wiggling side to side works. At least a lot better than WD40 or just trying to twist and pull.

if you bend the pipe side to side,up,down kind of agressive(like your trying to bend it in half)it opens the crimped down flange a little, that will help loosen it up..it is a lot easier mounted on the bike

A real man has a torch & they're less than $20.
