Trading a 2001 XL1200C for a 1971 Super Glide

then why are you asking strangers on this forum? there are 12 people here that can change their own hand grips without studying the manual ... and probably 3 that I would trust with a Shovelhead.

If I were in your shoes I would run away from that deal as fast as I could.
The only way I would even halfway consider the trade would be if that shovel was basically stock. The engine mods you listed looked a little scary. If you want to learn how to work on bikes you should get an older one as a SECOND bike and not your only one.

Here is what he said...I've removed the little stuff...he does mention that there is an oil leak however that was kind of something I expected to be honest on a bike that old or is the old "Every harley leaks oil" just another myth?

STD dual plug performance heads

new Custom Chrome forward controls
new Spyke high torque starter
Thunder header 2 into 1 exhaus

If it was a 100% stock bike I'd say go for it.
You have to ask yourself why does this guy want to get rid of this pride of spain bike (POS bike)?
He has a POS that runs like a POS. That is what that modification list indicates. Also that list does not indicate it was never riden under 30 MPH only to church on Sunday mormings to church.
But had been beat on every Saturday night all night long.
You will be spending more time working on it then riding on it. With it being a big hole in the road where you will keep dumping money into, and the hole will never get filled.

I was just looking at a picture of a white '71 with red and blue trim with the boat tail fender. I'm thinking if I had a chance I would probably pull the trigger on one if it looked good to me but I would have to really go over it personally.
The good part is you can work on the tranny on the kitchen table or dont have to be a he man to take off the primary and lift the engine on the bench to work on it.
a little time and patients and you can really have it tight enough so the oil leaks are taken care of. the only one's I had were from the chain oiler and fixed it with a sealed chain.
Its a bike youre gonna have to work on ( a lot) so if its your primary means of transportation you are gonna hate it. but like I said if its a boat tail super glide and in good shape I would buy it just to draw crowds at bike nights...

I know what was wrong with 40 years ago, but what makes it less desirable today?
