For me it depends on who you ask. For instance, my girl likes skulls because, for her, they represent her intelligent side (MA in business and is in charge of a large senior community). She has roses (The good things in her life) and dagers (obsticals in life) as well on her bike. (This is a simplified definition but the details are kind of personal to her.) So to her, skulls don't represent death at all...it's something completly different.
For me they represent the same kind of things that Maltees Crosses (Iron Crosses) represent to others...non-conformity. Now I'm not some huge rebel by any means but there are many parts of my life that, to most, would be outside the ordinary.
The WWII vets brought a lot of **** death head skulls back and started putting them on their ridding jackets just to look bad and show off their war souvenirs.
