Surprised Texas is ahead of California on this one. I always thought Texans were to be repected. This nonsence changes that. Shame on the Texas state government.

You can readily understand why the parents of the young woman would want to see such legislation enacted. I see it as an expression of their desire to turn back the clock, re-write history (or else someone with an anti-motorcycle agenda's climbed on this particular band-wagon to further their own interest--which is entailed in the details of the law). It's like a lot of laws--too specific. I think we write them that way so there's no room for interpretation in court, later. It's as if the law's authors/backers wish to try, and condemn, the offender in absentia, before the fact...rather than trust the judge and jury will do a proper job of interpreting our existing laws when the time comes.

More laws won't make a safer society. You can't legislate against stupidity, ignorance, immorality, bad luck, etc. For sure, there are reasons for this accident. Just as surely, one of those reasons isn't that there wasn't a specific law against it...
