RE: Medical Problem
Rick51, Isn't that the worst pain ever? and a sneeze will send you into orbit. Getting on and off the toilet is fun too. I have been living with this pain for 30 yrs on and off. I have been to chiropractors, bone specialists, sports doctors and had months of therapy. After a recent CT scan I was finally diagnosed with 3 bulged discs, spinal stenosis, arthritus and something called wear and tear. My left leg from my foot to my butt is tingling all the time (like when you fall asleep on your arm and cut off the circulation). I have good days and bad days. On the bad days I stay away from the bike. Sometimes when I'm riding I will hit a bump and I will feel pain right on the nerve but luckily every time my back has really gone out I have been off the bike. Like the others have said, exercise, loose weight if you need to and what I found works the best when my back is out is rest, but finding a comfortable position that lasts for more than 5 minutes can be a challenge too. I have spent 2 weeks on the living room floor crawling to and from the bathroom so I know the pain you are experiencing...........................BG

RE: Medical Problem
Surgery?
My observation ia that with surgery the odds are 1 in 3 all the way around.
33% chance your back will get better
33% chance it will end up just as bad or worse
33% chance that overall your back pain won't feel any better,it'll just feel different.

RE: Medical Problem
The best and smartest thing to do is determine the cause of this extreme pain and infim condition. I suspect the root cause is that damn Ultra....bets get rid of it...it's no good for you, sir (probably has some kinda voodoo curse as well, so selling is not an option....you'll have to feely give it away to rid yourself of the curse)....PM me, I can help.

RE: Medical Problem
I believe I have your answer!
I am 45-never had back pain in my life until the last year. It was so bad that I would drop to my knees and actually passed out a couple of times. It is a long story that I wll spare you but the bottom line is that now I am cured.
Between my input, my chiropractor and my trainer, we figured out the problem and everybody that I know that tried this had major relief. As we age, our muscles tighten. Especially in two places. The first is the hip flexer muscles (front, top of the leg, directly on each hip bone). As they tighten they literally pull us forward to the point where we are fighting them to stay upright. Then we are no longer using the spine to hold our weight, but instead, we are using our back muscles. Just think how sore your back would get if you walked around slightly bent over all day. Well that is exactly what we are doing.
The second muscle that is important to stretch is the psois muscle which runs down each butt cheek. They not only tighten but they are rarely tighten equally which causes a sort of twist to our frame.
It would take too long to describe the stretches here but I'm sure you can easily find them online.
It is natural for those muscles to tighten but it is enhanced the more you sit because they are in the shortened position while sitting, (meaning the hip flexer muscles). We sit at work, sit in front of computers, tv, on bikes, etc. Then we stand and the muscles say "no you won't either"!
Good luck. I am confident this will help.

RE: Medical Problem
Good post Fmshiner, right on the money.
I was starting to have some left posterior hip/back pain, was worried that it might be a herniated disk, bothered me a lot when seated for long periods of time.
This past summer I drifted away from off road mountain biking and back towards running.I'd learned a few years back and all over again last summer that cycling although fun and a decent workout....really is an inefficient way to maintain fitness. You have to ride hours on a bicycle to acheive the benefits of a 30- 40 minute run.
Without really thinking about it I noticed towards the end of the summer that my hip/back pain had disappeared 100% Running's a "whole body" excercise, and in this case it whipped some slack abdominal/pelvic and back muscles of mine into shape and now I'm pain free. 2nd best option:eliptical trainer- easy on joints, can do it indoors all year long, almost as good as running as a whole body workout.
Mostly quit the cycling,a quick run does more for me overall and leaves a lot more time to ride the Train....

RE: Medical Problem
wholly crappp.... mention disk prob's and everyone pipes in,,,Mine was in the cervical area,, had 1 removed and a fusion done,,,
I heard the lower back is much worse,,. I think the problem most of us have is ,we want to excercise,,, but actually DOING it!?
I always said " when I feel like excersing,, I lie down till the feeling passes"!!!.
