I always get off the bike when fueling and always stand to the side of the kickstand. I had a buddy that would always fuel his bike while sitting on it and never once did anyone say anything to him, but I never like the idea of it.

Interesting. I refuel straddling the bike all the time when I'm doing a "gas and go" stop. Sure, a lot of times I'll be off the bike when fueling if I need to take a leak, get a drink, etc. but otherwise I'm on the bike.
Food for thought, for sure.

I have to get off. Too short to do any good otherwise. I always try to fuel from the high side since the filler is there. That way I avoid moving the hose and nozzle over the entire tank.

I've always gotten off my bike to refuel. Hell, I have to stand up anyway to get my wallet out. At 5'8" it would be a stretch for me to refuel without getting off anyway. But I'm not sure I like the idea of someone telling me I have to get off.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I'm calling bullshit on the fire.....unless you are lighting up a cigarette or somehow creating a spark, there is no way a fire is going to start from a hot engine. Has your lawnmower ever caught on fire after spilling fuel on that hot engine?

Always fuel on the sidestand simply because if I fuel the bike standing up, and don't take off immediately, it just overexpands and runs out on the ground. That said, I doubt Shell really cares what you do. Their lawyers just want to be able to say they told you to get off the bike when you spill gas all over yourself, and possibly igniting yourself, while fueling while sitting on it. You didn't follow their policy, so it's on you. Just like McDonalds putting a sticker on the coffee cup warning it's "hot". It's just risk management.....

Stupid post.
Some guys are just to stupid to listen to reason and safey. I put them in the same crowd, "I just had to lay my bike down to avoid a crash"
