Charity rides

I just did one yesterday, not sure of the actual numbers yet but last year it was over 500 bikes. It is a 40 mile ride with about 12-15 motorcops escorting. They do a great job of blocking the intersections and many motorists get out and take pics as we ride by or wave, some are very obviously annoyed but I've yet to see anyone try and break the line. Not sure what it costs to have the police escort but it sure helps to convey a sense of order. And I've never gotten the sense that one of them was out of control as they fly by at close to 80 mph to get the next intersection, while we are inch worming our way down the road at 5-15mph.

A few year back (2005) I did the Illinois Freedom Run from Joliet to Marseilles. Not sure, but I was told that there was over 10,000 bikes. We staged at the race track in Joliet and the bikes were lined up about 6 abreast and around the entire track and spilled out into the parking lot. We had police escort, and blocked off I-80 for about 4 hours. Truckers helped block all entrance ramps. A few cars trying to get someplace looked like they had some agitated drivers, but most simply pulled over and watched the procession. I only saw one wreck on that ride, and I found out later that the rider was not seriously injured.

I used to do them but the last one I rode in was so full of obnoxious morons that a small group I was in pulled off and had a beer and waited til the whole pack went by. Yes, a beer. Safest action of the day.
I think it's kind of presumptive to think people who have crap to do, places to be, are going to sit through green lights and say, "gosh those bikers are bitchin'" and admire our bikes.

I was on a charity ride yesterday with 200 bikes, wasn't bad but a young girl tried sneaking by a blocker and cutting into our formation but someone stopped her. I don't even want to know what they said to her!!!! Almost one first place for nicest bike but the deceased bike was also entered so he won! I would of donated the trophy anyway but would of liked a pic holding it!!
