Eliminating Road Test
#31
I failed my "road test" in California on a Suzi GS850 with all the bags and fairing chit on it. I also had a bad front bearing (though I didn't know it), and between the bearing wobble and the weird weight distribution (and my lack of skills) ... well, I rode for two years on a permit. Know how hard it is to get ANYwhere in San Diego without using the interstate?
Most recently, got my permit (again, this time in Georgia) with the written test, and two weeks later rode my 1981 XL185 down and passed the course test.
Three months later bought my FXD, and later this summer I'm taking the MSF course.

Took my first test in SW Oklahoma, they had a radio headset you had to wear and they would follow behind you. Talk about nerve racking... seeing the cop behind you, listening to instructions through a headset while not getting run over at the same time. They also had different endorsements based on your age/ engine cc. Basicly if you tested on a 50-250cc, thats what your endorsement read. I believe there were 3 classes.
In KS I only had to take the written test, they took my pic and issued the new license with M on it. Not sure if they got thier wires crossed or what but I never had to take a riding test.

In January, 1974 rode my bike to the Scottsbluff County NB courthouse to take the driving test. They asked how I got it there and I told them I rode it in from a neighboring town. They passed me and gave me my MC endorsement without taking the driving test. I still don't know if it was because they were impressed by my riding, or because they didn't want to shovel the 15 inches of snow off the test track!
Back then, I rode year around, only had one car and my wife needed it most days.
