Late last July I rode from Atlanta to Seattle and returned in early August. The only bad weather I encountered was on the return trip in eastern Montana (torrential rain) and rain again when passing through Nashville. It's always a gamble but I planned the trip for that particular period to try to avoid most of the bad weather. Two out of nine days on the road is not bad...
Have a safe trip.

Yes my friend you are Right, but there are certain areas that are prone to fires like in California and tornados in tornado alley etc..... the odds of a BEST WX scenario must fall into 1 month or the other barring anything unusual. That is more of what I was going after.

Ok ... What you have is a vast country as you know and a world climate that is completely screwed .... you only have to look at the weather that has hit parts of the states ...... nothing is really accurate even the weather channel gets it wrong! ... having said that good luck on your journey and be safe .....

Best for Northern states Early September, late June isn't bad.
Southern states May- mid June or late Sept-October.
July and August will be hot except in very Norther places, also too many families on vacation.
Personally I plan based more on my time off the bike rather than the weather on the bike.

There's a big difference in weather crossing the US in July on Interstate 70 and Interstate 40 or Interstate 10.

I prefer sept.,less traffic, motel rate's are dropping a little, weather is a little more predictable.Probly just me but seems like cops are easier to get along with, pressure on everyone has eased off.

July is the only month that my town does not have a record for average snowfall amounts. Many of the mountain passes are still very iffy in June too. If you wait until August days are already getting shorter and tha is the big travel month for all the people and thier travel trailers and motorhomes with the family.

bob and patti carpenter(RoadRider magazine-early 70's...boy did i just date myself) said the best month for touring was october. they rode bikes for a living and said there was less unsettled weather in october than any other time of the year.
