it's a good idea to keep a bungie cord with you so if you lose the spring you can secure the stand up so you can get home.
Amen brother! The short ones with the plastic ***** at the end work best.

The last time I did it I took off the entire kickstand to put the spring on,I knew there was an easier method.And your right the shop manual is useless on this subject.

This is what I did. After leaving a 1/4 lb of flesh on bike - it was much easier to pull the three bolts that hold the foot control on, mount the spring (all tension is now relieved) and reinstall the forward control. Then wipe off blood.
