It's totally a function of the ways the dealer has to peddle it to someone. Some have a pipeline to other (metric) dealers and they will get on the phone with them and work the numbers right then so they have a guaranteed way to move the bike outta their shop. The marketplace rules how the dealer can work with you. Always go to Kelley Blue Book first, on line, et al and see whatcha got in value.

Heck, I think the dealer here will take a burnt matchstick if it means a sale... A friend of mine traded in one of those little 250 scooter things. (Don't ask) He stepped up and bought a new Wide Glide. They gave him a little less than what he thought he could sell it outright.

Traded in an old Honda VT1100 this spring on my RK. Dealer gave me probably $750 less than I could have got selling it myself. Didn't want the hassle due to work pressures and also some sales tax and registration fee savings involved in the trade.

I traded a Kaw ZZR1200 and a Suzuki SV650 for my Road King. I got decent trade in on them because the HD dealer also own(ed) a metric dealership and all metrics traded in there were sent down the road to that dealership. If the dealer has a good outlet for them, you'll probably get a good trade. If not, you'll be lucky to get wholesale.
