That is an urban legend. They really were a legit construction worker, police officer, Indian chief, cowboy, and soldier, however the biker actually rode a Kawasaki to better fit the image of what the Village People truly represents.

Well...Ya, but ain't none of us gay. They do it cause the guys that come into town for the rodeo spend a lot of money on clothes, food, and chit like that.

A guy I know that is a Manager at a drug store in town and said they tripled their order of KY in prep for last year and were sold out before 4:00 on the fist day.
