I used to never carry them. I even got stopped by a trooper and he didn't even ask for the registration and insurance proof. When I looked at the ticket he checked the box that I showed it to him. Recently I scanned the docs and put them as images on my phone. I don't know if this will work, but I could argue in front of a judge that this is "proof"

Go to the Post Office and get those clear plastic stick-on invoice/shipping label bags, then just stick it on your windshield.

Having traveled around the world, one thing I learned - don't carry a wallet. So I don't.
Some answers which seem obvious are not always so.
