My oil temp gauge pegged out on a long ride and let me know to pull over to let it cool for a while. Come to find out, I had an intake leak and was running too lean causing it to overheat.

Maybe its just fun to watch in traffic jams.

They have an air temp gauge so that you don't have to drill another hole in the inner fairing to install an oil temp gauge.

My guess would be to measure the air temp?

I have both an air temp gauge, which is on the handlebars, and an oil temp guage. It is on the dipstick.

My answer is the oil temp gauge doesn't affect the way I ride. It's useful to monitor how the bike operates, much more than the outside temp and that's about it.
