Buying Used Bike with Extended Warranty?
I have located a very clean 2009 model that has the Extended Warranty. The standard 2 year warranty expired in February 2011. Owner says I can "buy" the Extended Warranty (a transfer to me) for what he will get refunded to him. $800 bucks. My only concern is that this bike has less than 3K miles on it so nothing has failed on it that potentially COULD fail once I start putting the miles on it. I have read all the arguments in favor of extended warranties or against extended warranties but in this case its a little different in that the bike virtually has no miles on it. Personally I have always held that if anything is gonna fail it will most likely happen in the first two years so I have never bought the extended warranty on new bikes that I have bought. I know some of you will feel differently about this philosophy and thats cool too. Just would like to hear opinions on paying the extra $800 for the sense of security. Seller wont budge on the "price" of the warranty since Dealer is going to refund him the $800. Refuses to negoiate the price of the bike with the warranty included. I am happy with the selling price of the bike without the warranty but just cant decide to pop for the warranty. Thoughts?

Personally, many times those extended warranties are barely worth the paper they are printed on. I trust my self as a mechanic more than I trust the dealer. I'd say forgo the warranty.
If you want the warranty, ask to see the details. What does it cover? What DOESN'T it cover? Does it have a deductable and if so how much is it?

Robo, its the standard Extended Warranty offered by Harley Davidson good at any Dealership. Its not an extended maintenance plan. While Harley markets it as a 5 Year Extended Warranty, its really only 3 additional years beyond the standard 2 year warranty that comes with a new bike.....it would cover the bike in all regards just like the original 2 year warranty for the next 3 years.

I didn't see where the OP stated length of ext. wty which is really extended service. Be sure it is a Harley policy not Joe Smo policy. Did he buy the optional Tire and Wheel coverage? If so I would spend the $800.00 on it if it is for an additional 5 years but it sounds like it might be three. Understand there is a $50.00 deductable. If your going to put a bunch of miles on it would be another consideration.

ProStar, yes, it does include Tire&wheel coverage and its a legit Harley Extended Warranty not a maintenance package.....as I said previously it was sold with the bike when new as an Extended Warranty for 5 years but they start the Extended Warranty period on Day One so really you are only extending for 3.....sounds confusing I know but that is the way Harley sells it.
