Default Keys. I learned something new today.

So I was at House of Thunder (Morgan Hill,Ca) today.
Bought a few things. I only have one key so I asked if they could
dupl it.
I guess the prodedure if you want new keys from Harley is (and this is the barrell type) the black plastic cover slides off and the key code is stamped in the head of the key.
So they order it by part # with the code and you get two new keys from the factory. It takes about a week and it's about $25.00

My buddy had em do it. I'm going to take one more gander around the house for my MIA key. Because sure as hell, I'll get em, then find the old one & have 4 keys. And waste 25 bucks.

I'm thinking a locksmith can dupl those barrell keys. maybe for way cheaper.

Anyhow, so I learned something today.

Our dealer was able to cut a new key for us in the back room at no cost. This was to replace an original that was sticky (not cut right) .

I hate the Harley keys, that won't stay in the switch. To lock up the bike, you have to dig it out, lock the bike, rather than have the key right there to turn and lock. More than once, I've driven the bike down to get gas, only to discover I've left the key in my coat back home. But then, all you have to do is wait for another Harley rider who didn't forget his key, because any Harley barrel key will open a Harley locking gas cap !

something else that you can do if your local locksmith can't/won't do it. go to your favorite discount hd parts dealer (i recommend jon at hornytoad hd, 254-773-2243), and order the matching lock and key set for a tourpak, pn is 53848-00. comes with a lock, and 2 keys. and it's only $17.00.

thats why i went with the smooth pushbutton for the fuel lid. no key to worry about!

It doesn't have to be a Harley barrel key either. Any barrel key will do it.
Another thing they don't tell you is on those really rare occasions when you get a barrel lock out of time, is to take a spare and file off the end guide tip and insert your key wherever it got misaligned to. Just make sure you line it up according to the buttons which are visible. Now I have one of each type key on my at all times.
$0.02

Like Skratch says, ordering the lock set is cheaper than just ordering keys.
Also if you forget a key and need to open the fuel tank the barrel from a ball point pen will work.

You think $25.00 for a couple of keys is bad? Go to the dealer and tell them you need a new Ignition switch. Mine started going south a couple years ago, they wanted something like $120.00 for a new one with a lock matted to my keys.

I went on fleabay and found one for $20.00 I just have two keys now, one for the ignition and one for the fork lock. $120.00! What a crock.

When I bought my used '02 Heritage it came with one factory key. A locksmith cut 2 for me for 10 bucks. I keep the factory key in my safe and use the cut keys for everyday riding.
