Not too far back TC (1999 or so) Softail had a switch in there to make sure the cam timing matched the crank timer on the front left of the engine. Would throw a code if it got off I think. Last thing I think that has been in there.

That was an evo, not a twin cam.

No, there was actually a sensor in the cavity of the first models to 'sense' the cam position. You can see it (raised rib) on the earlier cams. A hole was in the cover, behind the round screwed on piece.

I say it would cost HD a ton of $$$ to re-design their engine block manufacturing process so they just keep turning them the same manner as when we did have points/timing adjustments to fiddle with. Also, to sell you custom covers...

Put a quarter in there for an emergency phone call. Oh, that's right, no more pay phones.

I have thought about it allot, especially when I'm on the chitter. Over the years I've decided they put it there just cause it looks cool and it's always been there since the intro of the cone Motor.

I've also thought about using it for storage but couldn't think of anything to put in there. Now that you have suggested spare Cam Chain tensioner shoes I think that is the best idea I've heard yet.

But...Of Course......I'm thinking of switching to gear drives so then I won't have a reason to put the shoes in there. I don't do drugs so I can't keep a stash in there. Well I guess I could but it really wouldn't do me any good.

Just the other morning I was thinkin bout it and thought it might be a good place to hide a bullet for my pistol just in case. But if I'm in a situation where I need one more bullet I'm probably gonna need it in a hurry and it would take too long to get it out of there!

OH Well...Back to the drawing board I guess.
