Default open air cleaner element

Hi all,
I have a stage 1 '03 WG and I would like to install a small disk air cleaner cover to replace the big oval factory cover.
My question is if you are riding in a downpour (which I hate ) is it OK with the exposed breather element? OR, should these type covers only be used in the southwest?
I live in Michigan and we get sudden thunderstorms in the summer and a quick soaker is not unusual here in july and august.
So, whats the thoughts on the open element type of air cleaner with just a chrome lid over the cartridge of a SE air filter??
Will it get waterlogged and cause problems, or is it made for this type of stuff and I have no need to worry about it??
Thanks for any help from those experienced with these kinds of carb covers.
later,
ron.

actually a little water will creat steam and clean the pistons and valves. we run exposed K&N filters on Chinooks, Blackhawks and Kiowa Warrior helicopters with no problems.

I will be in the minority then, I run with an open air cleaner and did get caught in the rain. Sucked in some water and the engine ran like "chit" I just carry my stock cover in a saddlebag now.
