Default Where did the term sled come from?

Can anyone enlighten me to the origin of why people started and still refer to harleys as sleds?
Are they a particular kind like a bagger or all harleys?

Thanks

I heard the term back in the late 60s and it seemed to refer to a rigid frame low riding scooters. Probably because the lower frame members were clearly visible and kinda looked like the skids of a sled.
You can also find that reference in the earlist issues of Easyrider magazine. I think it was in the Redrider and Little Beaver stories.

To reference your motorcycle as a "sled" or "scoot" makes me want to puke...

I have always referred to mine as a Sled or Scooter. I normally only have the "Puke" effect on women though.

Your statement has a nice rhyme to it. You might think about making it into a patch so people could put them on their vest's.

Edit...Actually I think that "Motorcycle" is really an incorrect term. I have always understood that a "Motor" refers to an electrical device and an engine is an internal combustion device.

So I guess if what I've heard is correct, then we all ride enginecycles and not Motorcycles.
