Where did the term sled come from?

Back in the late 60's a friend of mine was nicknamed "putt" has kept it ever since.. he liked to ride but would just go for a putt he used to say.... He did say "his scoot" too in later years but I don't remember when he started usin the term... the guys been workin on bikes and ridin since we went to highschool together!

Waaaaay back in the old days before "engines" were invented all Harleys were powered by dog teams. Usually two dogs that looked alike hence the term "Dtwin". They were called "dogsleds" because they were powered by the dogs. Once the motor ( electric) was invented they were called "motorsleds" then when internal combustion came around they were called "enginesleds". "Enginesled" really did not roll off the tongue ( or any other body part) that smoothly so the "engine" part was dropped hence the name "sled" for all Harleys.

It has stuck to this day except for those few individuals who "puke" at the sound of it; probably because they had to pick up dog turds as kids and the thought still revolts them.

I hope this helps clear things up. Oh....wait, is this the B/S forum???? Doughhh!!!!
