Where did the term sled come from?

Heard the term lead sled back in the 60's on the track... also some cars were called that also.... as usual shortened to sled....

I refer to my bike as a ghetto sled...

Never heard of a bike being called a sled, just snow machines around here. aka, snowmobiles.

I'm wondering how old you are. No offence but, I remember one time drinking with a couple of MCer's one night (great guys by the way they picked up the tab) as they were leaving they asked the bar-maid if she wanted to go for a putt on the back of one of the (now pay attention her) scooters. If you had said that to them your next few minutes would be lost to you forever.

Where did the term sled come from?
Back in the day we used to call any bike or whatever,
a "lead sled," if it was to big and heavy for the activity
at hand. Namely, desert racing.

When AMF bought out HD.....had to have sleds on them to slide them into the back of Pick-up trucks when they broke down in the 70's....as my did...

It was my understanding they were called sleds as they slid around the track. My uncle was an old school dirt tracker. I could very well be wrong though. I have been calling them sleds and scoots for about the last thirty years.

Up here in Michigan,we call Snowmobiles a sled.
