Default Derby cover gasket

So I am getting ready to do my first oil change on my 05 Road King and I went to the dealer a couple of weeks ago and bought new gaskets for everything. When I asked for the derby cover gasket the guy behind the counter asked if I had a stock or aftermarket cover. He told me that there was a different gasket needed if the cover is not stock. I had been planning on buying a new cover so I told him that I had an aftermarket cover. Well my plans changed and I am not going to replace it right now. Should I take that gasket back and get one for the stock cover? I'm not sure what the difference is between them, so I don't know if the one I have will even work with the stock cover.

Thanks
Phil

The stock cover uses an overgrown O-ring. The accessory covers use a flat gasket.

The O-ring in your OE cover is most likely good for several openings. It is a heavy rubber, don't mess with it and mark the cover as to which way is up and just reuse the old gasket.

Cool thanks... I did not realize that the one for the stock cover was actually a o-ring. I will just hold onto this gasket then instead of taking it back, just incase I do decide to get a new cover...

Thanks

The O-Ring is history. You can still use them but the new gasket is better. I use the new style in my old bike and is alot better. It can also be used numerous times before discarding.

When you say new gasket you are talking about the big disk looking gasket correct?

05 uses the standard HD disclike paper gasket (part 25416-99C) on HD or aftermarket covers. HD later came out with a new derby cover that has an "O" ring that fits into a channel in the cover. I think these started in 07 or 08. It is an orange rubber O ring. My 09 has this one & when I switched to an aftermarket derby cover I had to put the old style disc (25416-99C) in it. Your 05 should have the disc (25416-99C) for any cover & it looks like this

The new gasket is black both sides with one side orange lines and lettering. There is also a metal sheet between the two black faces.

OK, thanks for clarifying. That is what the one looks like that I bought.
