All the derby covers that Harley sells are the old style for the paper gasket. Newer bikes come with the 4 sided flat rubber/silicone ring. I posted pictures a couple of years ago but I think I took down the photos. I don't know about an 03 FX but here are the instructions for an 03 FX, no O ring, just the paper gasket. Maybe the paper gasket replaced an older style rubber O ring. http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...ts/-J03646.pdf
Well, I have had the derby off my 03 many times even put the Ride to Live cover on it when I first got it and it is the 4 sided "oring" Changed the primary fluid in my 08RK at 10000 (had5200 on it when I bought it) so the new o ring must have started after 08 And don't always believe those HD instructions. Just put the docking hardware for the detachable TP on my roadking, there is a lot more **** you have to at least loosen to get it on there, than they tell you about. Next time I pull the derbys I will take some pictures
I do not remove the derby on my 06 Road King when changing fluids. I remove the inspection cover to check the primary chain tension and replace primary oil there. Am I missing something by not removing the derby??

not sure if you can see the proper level of the fluid in the case thru that cover.
moco says 32 ozs. in the primary. do primarys vary in volume?? not trying to pick a fight here but you can not inspect or adjust the primary chain tension by removing the derby. oh well to each their own. you say potato---------

I use the inspection cover too but you have to be sure of the amount of oil. My 06 Softail takes 26 ozs. Different models vary.

I use the inspection cover for that reason also, but not to check and/or fill the primary. I pull the derby and visually check the fluid level. Call it peace of mind. I check my oil and trans before a ride, but I check them hot when I gas up also. Maybe it's **** but makes me feel good

07 and newer does not have the inspection cover, you have to remove the derby cover.
