I just use the same old "O" ring that fits in the groove in the outer primary cover. I just carefully wipe any oil off of it and the primary cover then press it back in the grove. Whenever I go by an indy I just stop in and pick up the gaskets I could use.

I've had my derby cover off about 12 times and my primary cover off about 4 times. I've never replaced either gasket, and never had any leaks.

You only need to swap out the O-ring only if something happens to it. I've never seen one go bad, only when someone does somthing to it.

Regardless of which gasket, it's a good idea to follow the bolt sequence and torque the bolts down to the suggested inch lbs.

that's odd. it should have come with the orange 'quad ring'. thats the oring, they call it quad cause it has 4 flat sides......

Not to be a wisenhiemer. A quad seal and an O-ring are not the same thing and shouldn't be confused with one another.

And a quad seal IMO is hands down far superior to an O-ring.

Sounds like the dealer swapped yours out for some reason or someone put on a different older style derby cover & gasket.

I think you are wrong . I bought a new derby cover for my 08 RKC in Dec. Bought a new gasket just in case, since I have had the derby off a couple of times already. It is the flat round gasket on the left of your picture. My 03 FX still uses the rubber oring. Maybe something changed with the 09 and newer. Just saying what I got for my christmas present. Actually it is a 4 sided flat ring

All the derby covers that Harley sells are the old style for the paper gasket. Newer bikes come with the 4 sided flat rubber/silicone ring. I posted pictures a couple of years ago but I think I took down the photos. I don't know about an 03 FX but here are the instructions for an 03 FX, no O ring, just the paper gasket. Maybe the paper gasket replaced an older style rubber O ring. http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...ts/-J03646.pdf

Right on , Been using the same "O" ring gasket for ten years. Multiple on/offs, the only gaskets Ive changed on my bike is the Exhaust. And Ive had lots of things apart!
