Default 88ci. to 98ci. tell me what you think

Iam putting in 510 mackie gear drive cams in a 05 roadking. Is it possible to install a 98ci. kit without doing any head work such as port and polishing.I would be usiing my stock heads.Or would a 95ci. be better.I plan on doiing stage two head work down the line.

seems to be more 95's than 98 builds in here...

U don't need to do any head work unless U want more HP and TQ..

Look in the touring section..... Sticky threads at the top........ DYNOS for Baggers...

chit, heres the link,, Ur new and may not find it..

Just read through the tread,, there's over 2k of dyno sheets to help U choose and pick what or how U want to do a build..

mostly U'll lean something.......about different builds and their results.

Theres one on Dyno sheets in the Softail secton also...

you can only do a 95 ci without doing a head remod. Had it done on my Ultra last year (as a result of a cam bearing going postal on everything inside) Has improved the performance, but still need to get a PC and map and get rid of my V&H fuel pak.

Yes, you can do a 98" kit and cams without doing anything to the heads. And you're starting to see more high compression 98" dyno's showing up. There are many shops now offering the kit (GMR Performance, Hillside Cycles, TMan, etc). It's a straight bore job with pistons, rings and all associated gaskets. I have no info on engine longevity or reliability on these builds.

I'll link a GMR Performance dyno of a 98" kit with Andrews 26N cams, a set of true duels, and no headwork that made 85hp/100tq. Not a bad starting point. I'm in no way representing GMR Performance, who you work with is entirely up to you. Just giving you some information.

So I can do a 98ci. and maintain 9.8 comp. or will I have to go higher.I have an 88ci. right now with 8.9 compression. Iam waiting for thoughts. also can the comp. be higher for 510 cams.

Yes, you can install a 98" kit without doing the extras.
I'm running a 98 inch kit from Hillside, but I had my heads done as well. Bike runs great and is reliable as hell.

I'm assuming you're talking about corrected compression. Haven't seen the DM 510's set up in a 98", but have seen those cams run at 10.0 compression and mild head work in a 95" build with good results. Most others I've seen stick around 9.5.
At 9.8 corrected compression, your cold cranking compression with those cams is going to be somewhere over 200 psi (depending on your altitude correction from sea level). You may need to install compression releases for hot starts. And you'll probably have to watch the grade of gas you use, none of that cheap, low octane gas.

Personally, I call and fly it past Scott at Hillside and see what he thinks. He's the expert at squeezing hp/tq out of builds. However, I can almost guarantee he'll suggest a Woods cam set up similar to cuda67's (some swear he owns Woods stock, LOL).

P.S. Nice looking numbers on that build cuda67.
