Extended warranty on a used bike

Extended warranty on a used bike
Hello,
I'm sure this question has been posed before. So forgive my ignorance.
I'm buying an 09 street glide privately at an excellent price, the bike has less than 3500 mi. on it. I've never had a twin-cam before, currently own 2 sportys and used to have an 85 w/glide, I put about 40K on it before I decided to tear it down.
Because this bike is being sold privately and I'm not familiar with this motor I'm considering an Extended warranty, any thoughts or input would be appreciated.
Thanks

Sure, I bought my '00 FLTRSEI in August of '07, bought an extended warranty, drove the bike for 4 months to be certain there were no issues. Then I cancelled the warranty and received a pro-rated refund.

Extended warranty
If the factory warranty has expired, you will not be able to get an extended warranty through HD. You will have to find a third party, which is always risky. If they go out of business, down the drain your warranty goes. There are a lot of pros and cons about extended warranties. Mostly what I have learned is, if you have the skill and tools to wrench and you feel comfortable digging into your engine or trans. Then no, an extended warranty is probably not worth while. However, as in my case, I can wrench moderately but have no intentions of opening up the engine or tranny. Therefore, the extended warranty is worth while for me plus with the tire and wheel coverage if I bend a spoke or have a flat it's covered. Hope this helps some.

In all honesty, I'd feel better knowing it's covered for the first year I own it, than if the need for major work is called for I'm covered. What's the average span on a 96er before a teardown or topend?

I don't buy extended warranties on anything. Think about it, they are money makers for the seller. Sure, they "might" save you a few bucks if you have a problem but I would rather not pay for any extended warranties on anything (TV, lawnmowers, cell phone, car, bike, etc., etc.) and pay for any repairs with the money I saved by not buying extended warranties. I bought my '02 Heritage 13 months ago. The dealer offered a one year 'warranty' for 800 bucks. I declined, and saved 800 bucks. The warranty would have run out a month ago and I didn't need it.
I bought an extended warranty on my wife's car. The warranty was $1200. During the warranty period it needed an $800 repair so the warranty ended up really costing me $400.
Most financial 'experts' I've heard say NO to buying any extended warranty.
I won't buy another one. But that's just me. Your mileage may vary!

My cycle was two years used when I bought it. I declined the warrentee which was still going. I have had a few repairs, but the cost of those repairs is still less than the warrenty. The dealer wants to sell them because it is a money maker. Odds are you'll spend more on the warrentee than the repairs would have cost you. You may "hit the jack pot" and need a costly repair, it's your risk to take.

IMHO, on an '09, low mileage bike, I wouldn't invest in an extended warranty.
