High Vis Gear & safety lighting?
#51
No time...
My wife refuses to ride with me - says we can't leave the kids totally orphand when I get pancaked by some teenage girl texting her boyfriend while doing 90mph through town.
So I started thinking about high vis gear, reflectors & maybe even a strobe light.
What kind of stuff is out there? I will mostly be riding back & forth to work, highway - 25 miles each way, but plan to ride it anywhere else I can get away with too.
Has anyone ever mounted a strobe light on the back of the bike? Maybe wired into the tail/brake light?

Slight correction - hi-viz was determined to be the most obnoxious, err, visible color to normal sighted humans in daylight. Headlights cast a different light and the hi-viz becomes less effective. Better than black but still less effective.
At night we're much better off with reflective material as it bounces the most light back thus making us more visible. During the day that reflectivity gets mostly lost as do some aux lights. The reason is that conspicuity requires that the light (reflected or not) be different from the surrounding light sources. That means that either it is significantly brighter than its surroundings (more candlepower), a different color (always notice the blue tinged lights right?) or alternates between dark and light (brake lights).

Good advice - I'll be adding the flashing tail lights & the strobe - cops be damned.
The commute where I live in central Illinois is pretty easy - very little if any traffic & though 5 out of 10 cars has an idiot driving - I have fewer of them around me than say chicago or LA.
I dont mind the bike sitting in the parking lot all day either. Not sure why anyone would worry about the bike being in the parking lot? I mean - its not a golden egg - its a bike meant to be ridden.
But I've always had a belief that a car or truck or a bike is a tool, like a hammer - you use it for a reason - haul kids to the Dr. haul fire wood for the fire -haul my *** around to relax -they each have their use - but sitting in the garage is not one of them.

Thanks for all the help and advice. For the guys that are bickering back & forth - just remember in america we can all have our own opinions & nobody is perfect. Maybe its just winter blues getting everyone riled up.
I'm going to look at the bright *** lights - front & back.
I already have the loud *** pipes -
As for the other areas where I can get killed - yup they are all true. But the wife doesn't worry about those & when momma's not happy nobody's happy.
Anyway - I figure the harley is safer than a girlfriend

Some folks you just can't reach, we all hear stories of people not pulling over for ambulances with the lights flashing and the siren blarring. Unless the other driver looks, don't much matter what you're wearing. jmho.

My thoughts exactly. I have ridden over 200 thousand miles with wheelen red strobes connected to brakes. Only comment from cops was positive. Have ridden in 48 states with them and no problems . Also wear highvis jackets or shirts, believe me it makes a difference. But keep in mind that idiots will pull in front of trains and 18 wheelers so stay alert and train for the day it happens.
Not positive I'd want that kind of attention.

She won't have to worry about any stray women getting on his bike. LOL

They werrent kidding! A bit spendy for the 12LED version but cheaper than a year with a HALO bolted to my head.
I'm going to have my local dealer go through the bike here in a couple of weeks - I wonder if they can get these & install at the same time?
I think I'll do the LED's under the tank too. I think they look sharp.
