It is not mandatory here in Minnesota, but I put a lot of time in on my bike every year and I've read waaaay too many reports of accidents this year. I just figured my number may be coming up after 17 years of riding with no helmet.

I live in Ohio where I don't have to wear a helmet, and don't wear one unless travelling out of state. I read many articles in the newspaper where a motorcyclist was killed and it finishes the article stating..."he WAS wearing a helmet". If you guys want to revert to name-calling when it comes to someone who chooses not to wear a helmet (so far I have read stupid and dumbass), then so be it. I am not going to get into reasons to wear, or not to wear, a helmet. I choose not to wear one, and if you think I am a dumbass because I don't, then simply don't ride with me.

Also, I've found that here in Connecticut, where there is no helmet law, I don't get waved to as often as when I ride outside my state. Is it because of the full-face helmet? Do they think I'm metric and snub me? I wave at everybody, regardless of the bike's make.

Up here in Canada, we don't have the choice, so I've always ridden with a lid, and really didn't know if I did have the choice, whether I would wear one or not. Then I got the chance to ride without one for a while when I was in Delaware at the beginning of August, and I can tell you that if I had the choice, I would be going lid-free! It just felt "right".
Cheers!

Sorry to hear about the downed biker.
Reference the helmets: -Optional in FL as long as you carry $10,000 medical insurance to cover the rider's medical bills and the taxpayers don't have to foot the bill.
-I wear a Super Seer half helmet.
Ride safe.
