Amusing...concerned about mpg after spending (sometimes big bucks) to increase output and performance. Somewhat like buying a hemi charger, and wanting prius mpg.

Aint necc so....
Haven't pulled the jugs yet, still gathering intell
Use the bike to commute, so yea...I thinks it's a valid Q.

If I understand my research right, a properly tuned higher performance engine will match or exceed a stock twin w/o a tune. Some of these reply's appear to validate such claims.
Just sayin'...

Yup, it's a valid question, within reason....just don't expect Honda 90 mileage. I have a fair number of bike riding coworkers who do! I tell them they shoulda bought a bus pass.

Of all the different upgrades available: Head work, Cams, Exhaust etc...Nothing beats a displacement increase for the $$$ invested.

I hope nobody is doing these mods for increased mpg...they're all about a reduction in time involved moving the same mass forward (excepting mods that eliminate EPA emissions control crap).

But if you get horrible mileage and have a 5ish gallon tank and are traveling in a group of long-haul riders, having to stop every 100-125 miles (or even less) can make you unpopular with your group.

We had a guy with a Sporty 1200 who traveled with us once. His gas stops every 80-90 miles did nothing to endear him to many rider in the group.

I get about 38-40 mpg around town and 47-48 mpg on long trips. As others have said, it depends on how you twist the throttle. My bike specs are below my sig picture.

Default Mileage

Stock my bike got 49.9 MPG...first round of mods included 211 cams, HC pistons, big bore cylinders ( 95") and SERT..the bike got 45MPG. Latest mods include new S.E. CNC heads, S&S 585 gear drive cams, HTCC pistons, and Thundermax tuner. I get 40-42 if I stay out of it and probably 35 if I don't.
