Haven't pulled the jugs yet, still gathering intell
Use the bike to commute, so yea...I thinks it's a valid Q.
If I understand my research right, a properly tuned higher performance engine will match or exceed a stock twin w/o a tune. Some of these reply's appear to validate such claims.
Just sayin'...

But if you get horrible mileage and have a 5ish gallon tank and are traveling in a group of long-haul riders, having to stop every 100-125 miles (or even less) can make you unpopular with your group.
We had a guy with a Sporty 1200 who traveled with us once. His gas stops every 80-90 miles did nothing to endear him to many rider in the group.

Mileage
Stock my bike got 49.9 MPG...first round of mods included 211 cams, HC pistons, big bore cylinders ( 95") and SERT..the bike got 45MPG. Latest mods include new S.E. CNC heads, S&S 585 gear drive cams, HTCC pistons, and Thundermax tuner. I get 40-42 if I stay out of it and probably 35 if I don't.
