SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Harley-Davidson Inc. shares jumped more than 8% on Tuesday, rallying as strength in the motorcycle giant’s financial-services division contributed to a narrower fourth-quarter loss.

Harley’s stock closed up $2.94 at $39.43 and has now gained 68% in the past year to trade at its highest level since late in 2008.

Milwaukee-based Harley (HOG 39.35, -0.08, -0.20%) reported a net loss of $46.8 million, or 20 cents a share, compared with a loss of $218.7 million, or 94 cents a share, in the year-earlier fourth quarter.

Excluding discontinued operations, the latest loss would have been 18 cents a share.

Quarterly revenue rose to $917.1 million, up from the prior year’s $764.5 million.

Analysts polled by FactSet Research had expected the company to lose 7 cents a share on revenue of $854 million.

“In 2010, we expanded our international footprint, saw improvement in our motorcycle segment results driven by the restructuring of our operations and returned [the financial services unit] to solid profitability,” said Chief Executive Keith Wandell.

Retail sales of new Harley bikes decreased fractionally in the U.S. and by 1% worldwide. That compares favorably to an industry that has seen its retail sales of heavyweight bikes in the U.S. drop 14.8%.

For the full year, Harley motorcycle sales fell 8.5% globally from 2009, with a drop of 11.7% in its home market as opposed to a 14.6% decline for competition.

Harley’s financial-services division contributed to the quarterly improvement by swinging to an operating profit of $43.5 million from a year-earlier loss of $7.1 million a year ago. The company cited higher net interest income and lower provisions for credit losses.

Harley also said it expects to ship between 221,000 and 228,000 motorcycles to dealers worldwide in 2011, which would represent a 5% to 8% increase from a year ago. For the first quarter, Harley’s management is targeting shipments of 51,000 to 56,000 bikes.
