Speedometer Accuracy...
#32
mine seems to be reallyclose when i ride through the speed reading signs they have out but when i ride with friends they say they're going atleast 5mph slower than i am when they are behind me. i need to get the gps out to see if it's my bike or theres

There are three metric bikes here and next door, and my 07 Heritage Classic. All three metrics are reading 50 mph when the GPS reads 55 mph. The Harley reads 54 when the GPS reads 55. I have had a hard time convincing them to SPEED up. Traffic is passing at every opportunity and I can't get out of 5th gear....EVER!!!! Drives me NUTS.

Always check with a GPS or pay the price (speeding fine). Most are low, any change to tire size, brand or pressure differential can affect. I changed my ATV tires with the same size different brand and they were an inch higher and wider affecting the speedometer/odometer. Know the limits of your speedometer... like the parallax between a rifle bullet and the optics. Mine is off about 2-3 at 65 on the low side. I tend to ride the limit of ticket potential around here so 65 in a 55 has so far been OK... knock on wood.

Here's a chart we passed out to our MSF students, compliments of the Mn State Patrol. Take a stop watch with, and check against mile markers.
Dakota Digital makes an inline device for correcting Harley speedometers.
