I was recently stopped for loud pipes. Cop had his ticket book out. I politely asked why the local sherifs department (I was at one of there bike rodeos a week before) had slip ons on there HD patrol bikes but I cant run slip ons on my bike? He said, good question, and gave me a verbal warning.
I don't mind following the law when everyone has to, but when law enforcement dosn't follow the law they can kiss my a$$.

Just a thought

If your pipes are truly not loud, go to court and ask for a jury trial. Put the cop on the stand and ask if he has received training in sound decibel detection and if so when was his hearing checked or certified? ASk how many loud noise tickets he has issued. ASk him to describe something that is 95db. research and find examples of 95 db. Bring a recording of your bike or bring your bike. NOw, if you have modified your pipes and he tickets you for that and not the noise, probably all bets are off.

The ticket should not go on your driving record because it is an equipment violation just like haveing a burned out headlight or tailight and not a moving violation. Should not affect your insurance.

Like Bubba said--everything at trial has to be certified--radar guns--speedometers--so why not noise detectors or the LEO's ears--Hey--I am retired LEO myself--some of us are dicks--I got stopped in Texas on my bike for 81 in a 70 at 7 AM on a Sunday--had to pull rank on the PO--I am retired Sgt so he let me go with a warning--give me a break.

The cops don't have to prove anything in California - it's a judgement call on their part. Here are some good links for more info. Please let us know if you find a way out of it, and good luck!

Illegal equipment most often cited by the California Highway Patrol (CHP):

Here's a great Q&A site on CHP rules and ticketing guidelines:

Here are the noise limits and how they test:

That, and being honest with ourselves, we ALL Know if the aftermarket parts we buy are legal or not, and we ALL take the chance of getting a ticket when using them. So, if we as bikers get pinched for an equipment violation for equipment we KNEW was in violation....oh well. Play with fire, and sometimes ya get burned.

Why do you think a cop is being a "dick" if he enforces the law. If someone were stealing your bike and the cop said "I don't want to stop him because someone might think I am being a "dick" I bet you would get pissed.

Geesh! Cycle Shacks are NOT that loud! Anyway, here is what the AMA website lists for California (note the based on measurements part):

Muffler Muffler required. No muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device (27150. Adequate Muffler Required).
Maximum Sound Level Maximum allowable A-weighted sound levels based on measurements taken at a distance of 50 ft from center lane of travel:1)Pre-1970..92dba; 2) After 1969, and before 1973...88dba; 3) After 1972, and before 1975...86dba; 4) After 1974, and before 1986...83dba; 5) After 1985...80dba (27201-27202. Motorcycle Limits).

Hopefully there is no local law the supercedes it.
