Something Harley dealers never tell you is you can get store credit. I didnt get what I wanted for my trade in and a friend of mine worked at a dealer and told me to request store credit since I was buy parts anyway, got 1100 bucks to comp for my shitty trade .......

 

Personally I think you're starting too high.

Everything is negotiable, always. Especially with cash, but even with creditors as well. Don't like the interest rate, don't take it.

Harley's are not diamonds in the rough, you can find another one, and you can find another dealer, make sure you know that, and make sure they know you know that.

Never fall in love with something that cannot love you back.

Like one person said, phone calls and faxes or email are your best bet. Don't be shy. Start out with $200 over invoice, and let them know you will want to see the dealer invoice. Even if you end up $1000 over invoice, you're way ahead of where you are now. Stay away from sales peeps until you get the deal. Then, don't let the meetings with the sales manager, the insurance specialist, the credit manager and/or the chrome consultant change your mind (it's a scary ordeal, LOL, but seriously, hold your ground, or cave, your choice).

Even if you do want extended insurance, your call... keep in mind even that is (substantially) negotiable!

I personally paid 1k under msrp and no freight or setup. Keep shopping for a good dealer, might help if you let people know where you are located.

 

Don't pay the freight and set up. I didn't and you shouldn't either. Shop around there're plenty of dealers that would like your money.

 

Mine was about $500 off MSRP out the door.

 

It has been my experience shopping other dealers that freight usually isn't marked up. You can go onto Harleys website and they will give you the freight amout. Set-up, on the other hand, I have seen vary from a cost of around $175 up to $650 depending on the dealer.

 

I'd not worry very much about how they get to the number you are willing to pay. I WOULD worry about what the total bottom line is. I paid $2,000 less than MSRP last March for a 2010 not including Tax and License plus 20% discount (your basic eBay/Internet pricing) on all parts purchased at the time of sale. I had to contact 27 dealers in Southern California to find 3 that were willing to deal and 2 of the three had the bike I wanted. The "Discussions" took a couple of weeks back and forth to weed out the Dealers who were BS Artists. But in the end it was as if I had taken a two week part time job that paid me $2,000 after taxes.

 

I picked up an 09 Road King 2 years ago from a local dealer here in NJ. Their offer to me was sticker less $2000 with no freight or set up charges. Of course it was a leftover and they had gotten their shipment of 2010's in already. They weren't willing to do the deal on the newer bikes, just looking to clear out the older stock I guess. As fate would have it, it was exactly what I was looking for, basic black w/cruise.
The bike business sucks right now. You should be able to basically set the terms, within reason. Beat them up but leave them feeling like you gave in some also. If one dealer doesn't have what you want, try another. (make sure the dealers aren't the same owner - lots of that here in Jersey)
