Question Strange Battery

While detailing my Ultra, I was listening to the radio. The radio quit. I didn't notice that my battery had gone flat, so I automatically suspected my KH radio. A few hours later, I whacked the fairing a couple of times, tried the radio and it came back on....then I noticed the headlight when I turned the switch on, it was VERY dim. I put a trickle charger on and charged it all night. It only came up to 10.5 volts. I immediately went on line and bought a new battery. I went back downstairs and re-connected the charger and monitored the voltage, it came back up and is now holding steady at about 12.8 vdc (charger disconnected). What the hey! What could have been the prob? Is my battery bad?

Sounds like a loose connection at the battery or elsewhere. Batteries can't gain power suddenly that way.

Could be a lot of things, remove the battery and have it load tested.

2 times or 3 times? The HD service manual specifically states you should whack the fairing no more than twice when doing diagnostic checks

I agree with Torquey. By getting a different reaction to the banging..I'd say you got a loose or frayed wire or connection somewhere. Do a code check.

My bad, I have a manual but I didn't read all of it yet. I'm afraid I over-whacked.

back when I had my VTX, they had all sorts of problems from electrical connections vibrating loose. My money is on a bad connection----and one too many whacks!
