Glad you survived this to tell such an eliquent story of your experience. I have read the entire thread and appreciate you reminding me of how important it is to wear the safety gear all the time. Now if I can convince my wife to do the same. She has become somewhat of a fatilist, thinking it more important for her to look pretty and be comfortable. We will revist your experience before we head for Sturgis.

I ride in your area alot but you didn't say where you went down. Were you doing the Lake ride? There are lots of twisites there. We ride that one from Overton to Valley of Fire or on to the dam. I have found lots of gravel on those roads, and that is the vision in my head were this happened. Was the clinic in Overton?

My wreck was way back in 1988, and I can still remember all the things I managed to do an think in what was probably a single second or so. Amazing how your brain moves everything into slow-mo.

I just love happy endings. That was quite a ride! I'm glad both you & the bike are going to be ok. You should be making $$$ with your keyboard, well told.

I have that same exact helmet!
I hope if (when) I go down, I'm that lucky to escape with "minor" damage like that!

DON'T BRAKE!
Go straight.
Go into the desert.
Is that a coyote? (I really did catch a glimpse of something darting in the distance)
I'm wearing the wrong helmet to do this.
Don't land on your head.
It's too nice of a day to crash.
Don't Brake (I thought this several times.. but I looked today and I did hit the brakes when I went into the dirt, dangit)
Float (I race downhill mountain bikes, and the zen statement is always to 'float' the tough sections)
Glad you're ok! Great story - Bad situation.

Isn't it amazing how fast the mind can work? I remember sliding upside down in a open-wheeled race car at about 130 mph, about 30 years ago, and how many thoughts went through my mind in those few seconds.

If you could think that fast in everday life, just imagine how much you could accomplish.
