I gear all the way down in any vehicle I'm operating...truck, car, bike. And yes, most all of my vehicles are manual.

If its a long light I will pop it into N.

That's the only answer I know. 1st gear unless there is a stopped car behind me and I need to use both hands for something.

Like many others have said, 1st gear, I'll gradually downshift through them coming to a stop. I always leave it in first unless stuck in stopped traffic or at a railroad crossing or something. I try to leave enough room in front of me to scoot out of the way and in between lanes if neccessary, too.

If I'll be sitting for a couple minutes, I'll pop it into N.

Setting still in gear will put wear on a wet clutch. It's only wet with the motor not running.
huh??

Who says you can't get high on ethanol fumes?

----------------------

The purpose of a transmission is to match engine power with road speed. Shift down to slow down, shift up to speed up. Plain and simple. When you come to a stop there is no question you should be in first the final few mph, just in case the yoyo on the cell phone behind you isn't stopping.

It's fun to read all the posts....you have those who don't believe in engine braking because it "causes wear on their engine" (so shifting up doesn't cause wear, but shifting down does?
How does that work?), but then that contradicts with those who think a throwout bearing will fail if they hold the clutch in while they coast to a stop (Hey, it's a bearing--they are made to turn ! ) So what's more expensive,,,,a failed throwout bearing or a set of brake pads? How about the ruined aluminum wheels pitted by brake dust?

---------------

But a wet clutch is only wet when not running? I guess that is why my clutch plates are all stuck together after the bikes been parked for a week....not running.

Cagers on cell phones. One got me at a toll booth when I reached into my pocket for the toll.Luckily for him there was a TBTA cop in the next lane who got to me before I got to him. Then the ignorant assed toll bitch starts telling the cop that I was in the wrong because"the law says a motorcycle has to stay 2 car lengths in front of another vehicle in the rain".WTF??? Who hires these people?Even the cop threatened to slap her if she didnt shut up.

Stop sign at uncontrolled intersection, 1st gear. Waiting at a light for it to turn green, neutral, never know when someone's trying to beat the light. As far as keeping it in 1st to get out of the way.....by time you find that out, it's too late. my .02 I mean if someone comes up your butt, what will you do?, pull out into the cross traffic?

gradually downshift through the gears...usually engine braking.
feels good to just stay in first at the stop. ready to go. unless, as others have said, its a unusually long stop. then go to neutral
