valvestem had it right. If'n you scrounge a picture of a pre-65 Big Twin, or an old 45 WL, you'll see the derby cover looks like "doiby" (apologies to the Stooges). The old tin primaries went away with the intro of the electric foot.

I think it started at an ICE fishing derby,,,,,,,,, A fishermans line got tight and and out he pulled a huge "LUNKER",, no one knew what it was,, so a lill boy named A. Davidson pushed it home crying out, come look what I got at the DERBY..and the rest is history!!!lol
