Why are MC wheels so expensive?

Anything dealing with fun and recreation costs plenty. Once had the hair dryer in our RV go bad under warranty. Went to dealer and they pulled one of the retail shelf and gave it to me. Box was marked 60 bucks. Now this was a plain old hair dryer you could buy at Kmart for 15 bucks. Wanna have fun....you gonna pay.

Motorcycle wheels are:
1. custom made low volume production (you are paying tooling costs)
2. two sided wheels vs a one sided car wheel
3. a critical safety component and cannot fail or the rider is seriously injured

My other 'illness' is constructing and flying giant-scale R/C airplanes. What do you think about spending $250.00 for one 6" B-17 'scale' wheel?
Foolish? Possibly, but's again, it's what the market bears.

Nice wheels!
Those are nice and about what I was thinking of for my Electra Glide. Can I ask what brand and where to find them? $350 ea. is expensive but doable for me.

Most of those really low-cost car wheels are Chinese knock-offs of other wheels. They have some issues such as flatness of the mounting surfaces, are usually a heavy cast wheel, and if they have "bolts" for the three-piece look they often have to be completely rebuilt before they'll even hold air. The finish is usually not very good either. They'll look fine for a year, but then brake dust, and sand attack the finishes. You only get what you pay for.

Hmmmmmm. I was toying with the idea of changing out my spoked wheels for some mags solely for the purpose of being able to run tubeless tires. Now Im not so sure. Long winter ahead... plenty of time to do some research.

Everything for a bike is more expensive than for a car--Wheels,tires,oil,filters,repairs,etc. But you make it up on gas, insurance, & registration.
