Default Dealer adds "get ready for resale" cost to trade in??

Yesterday I traded in my 2009 FLHR for a 2011 FLHP (103, tach, 16" apes - I couldn't resist).

I only went in with the wife to scope out what we might want to use the 30% off coupon for. No intention of buying a bike.

Anyway, the dealer gave me what I thought was a decent trade in allowance for my 2009. But then he subtracted $326 for the cost of an oil change and rear brakes to get the 2009 ready for resale.

I've never heard of such a thing, so...

Is it normal for the dealer to make you pay to get your trade ready for resale???

When I checked into trading our '06 for a 2011 Road Glide Ultra with the 103, the sales rep said they would have to deduct to check out the cam tensioners, then was estatic when I told him I had already installed Andrews gear drives. It made about a $300 difference on what they would give for mine (which I decided to keep).

I can understand them wanting to deduct what it would cost them to make it sale ready but only what there actual labor costs are (what they pay their mechanic) not the shop labor rate. And parts of course (not retail but their cost).

Trading in a bike that needs a tire is no different than trading in a bike with higher miles or hasn't be taken care of. It should be included into the amount they are willing to pay for your trade. Make sure you go to at least 3 dealers. Otherwise you have no idea if they are giving you all the money for your trade....

It's a common practice. Basicly your paying to repair your trade-in so they can sell it. That's why you make sure your trade-in is in great shape. You'll pay for it anyways.

Stupid that they added it after. They should have taken that amount into consideration and offered you that much less. You never would have know about it. Bad practices on their part.

IMO that should be something the dealer takes into account when he gives you the initial trade in value of your bike, not after the fact.

Tell them that they need to take $1000 off there asking price because your going to have to put some better pipes on.
