Second the Ouachita Mountains, which is in Ark.

Fayette County is a great place to live and not far from Memphis. I ride my bike to work everyday when the weather permits. 33 miles oneway, all the way to the airport.

Goodluck!

You will not have any problem...Memphis put up new signs to tell you where the bad parts of town are...they say "Memphis city limits" Bartlett, Collierville, and Germantown if you have plenty of money...north Mississippi if you don't...Raleigh...NO. I live in MS and work in Memphis...and only have a 5 mile commute.

I lived through 40 years of adult life in Detroit, why is it everyone thinks Memphis is so bad?

there are some decent roads within a few hour ride of Memphis. The city is a shithole and if I could leave I definitely would. I've lived here my whole life and wish I could relocate to east tn.

Read the OP -- says "in the area" of Memphis.

I used to live in Hot Springs and my brother lives in Searcy (been there bunches). I know that state!

All above are right. Stay outside the 240 loop. Most suburbs are the bet places to live, northwest MS is best. Some decent back roads to ride on - but if you ready for a full day (or two) of riding, head east to Pickwick Lake or west to Arkansas (it takes about 2.5 hrs to get to the hills (mountains).

Some of the others have said it already but it bears repeating.

Best advice I can give you for Memphis is to buy a gun and always carry it. And an extra magazine. It's the South's version of Detroit.
