Smile Garage Heat

I work in the HVAC installing furnace's, heat pumps, etc. A lot of people are currently upgrading their heating systems to 95% effecient systems. Some of the furnaces we are taking out are less than 10 years old, and are just junking them. I have taken some of these and am in the middle of converting 2 of them from natural gas to propane for a few of my riding freinds. Check with your local heating contractor, see what you can pick up for free.

I use a downflow furnace that I took out several years ago to heat my garage, tied into the natural gas line, tied into the existing venting from the house furnace (it sits in the garage). I made a base to set thefurnace on and cut an opening in it to blow the heat accross the garage. Sure makes the garage comfortable! Being in the pacific northwest it helps keep the moisture level down!

Used to with wood stove, then looked into a couple of small Propane hot air furnaces. In the end decided did not work out there enough to bother. Now just dress warm and comfortable.

The O.P. asked about heating a garage so he could work on his bike during the winter. Seemed like a good question, and all the answers seemed intelligent,

except one.

FWIW - I've got a 24x24 with insulations in the ceiling, walls and door and I use a 20,000 btu unvented propane with a blower on it . .it does "ok" but if I was doing it again I'd probably do at least 30k. I think we get a little colder here in IL than you do in NJ though. What I did was put in the 20k wall mount and I've got a 60k btu salamander .. .I can fire the salamander up and have it "decent" in 5 minutes or so then I use the "quiet" 20k unit to hold the temp the best that it can.

Good luck!

PS - If I ever hit the lottery I'm going to have in slab heat (water coils) put in . .that stuff is SOOOO nice if you have to lay on it to work under the car.

Thanks for your in put guys. I just order the 30,000 BTU nat/gas Sun Star infrared heater from Northerntool.com $219.00 They also sell the same unit for propane. I will take some pictures of my set up and tell you all how well I like it.
