A real dumb oil change / service question
OK, dont kill me for being a moron.
So I know I read and thought that oil changes should be done every 3k. I just got a manual and the way it reads it seems oil changes are part of the services. As an example at 10k, 15 and 20k.
But if I changed my oil at 13k do I go ahead and have it done early with my 15k service? I am going to to be off that schedule? Do folks run 5k with synthetic? I do in my car but have no idea in the bike.
I dont want to start a synthetic vs regular oil debate. Just want to understand the recommended oil change schedule and services.
Thanks,
Dave O.

Change it every 5k, unless you spend a lot of time in traffic or at idle. No need to be more frequent unless you drive in extreme conditions (dust/heat/lots of time in traffic, etc)

5,000 is manufacturer recommended. Can't go wrong with that.
That said - more often than recommended certainly will not hurt anything.

I also just follow the manufacturer service schedule. The first one was at 1000K and I switched to SYN 3. The next was at 5000K, which is only four thousand miles after the initial service. The remainder services are at 5000k intervals.

do it on the 5000 mile intervals so it is easy to remember. So you next one will be early but the oil coming out should be cleaner leaving cleaner oil in that you cant drain out.

If you ride on some hot days, that dyno oil will be quick to break down in viscosity. If you are okay with running 20w, then please ignore this post. LOL
Air cooled motors get hot, syn oil resists breakdown. Dyno breaksdown fast. I run syn and change every 5 or 6 thou. If I were to run dyno oil, I'd stick with the 3 thou.
As far as the question about changing early for services? It's your money. I wouldn't. If anything, I'd change it later to match the service. But I run syn. 100 percent of my reasoning is specifically the resistance to breakdown and no other reason. It's not "more slippery". he he!
The extended interval kills the cost argument. 1 oil filter and 3 quarts every 6 thou, compared to the cost of 6 qt dyno and 2 filters in the same miles.
