If you don't know what they are wrapped with, it's perfectly legal to dump 'em in with the garbage...
The pipes in my attic were wrapped with some type of white cardboard...
Around here, a homeowner can discard asbestos if it's double bagged.
Contractors are a different story.
Also, unless it's tested by a certified lab and found to be asbo, it's just "high density insulating material of an unknown nature"
Google it and read. Heat breaks down the pipe over time. If you focus the heat to stay mainly inside it dramaticly increases fatigue. You never should heatwrap Ti pipes.

they reduce the heat felt by the rider and you don't burn yourself if you accidently touch the pipes either....isn't it about time for people to stop worrying about what others do to their bikes?
exactly
it knocks the external temp at least 50% and for me that is
awesome because it didn't come with heat shields for the pipes.(Vance & Hines pro-pipe)
There are a few other reasons, one is for burn protection, also the header runs very close to the engine fins, so it's also to keep heat away from there. Also if the exhaust gasses are kept hotter (i.e. higher pressure) as they leave the cylinder, they evacuate faster which leads to better breathing for the engine. Faster exhaust equals faster intake equals better performance. That's the theory anyway.
