I have noticed you can get cheap crappy imported chrome replacement parts for around the same price as what you'll pay to get your original part powder coated. And it will be shiny. If you want the original part re chromed by a quality shop here in the US, its gonna cost allot more than getting it powder coated.

Powder coating is going to be cheaper. I took several parts in to the local powder coater (crash bar, highway pegs, and some other bits and pieces), and I think I paid about $120 total.
The only thing you have to watch with the powder coating is that it tends to heat the metal, and can warp some. I found that when I powder coated the accessory lamp covers for example. Also the thickness as someone else noted is something to consider. The highway peg pieces I powdercoated took a bit of work to get that back together!

Powder Pro offers a "chrome look" powder coat. The pics look good but I have not seen it in person.
