Default Damn Dogs! Bike out of commission for a month or two!

I was coming out of the small town we live in and they have just re-asphalted the road so it is jet black. I was going 30 MPH in a 30 MPH speed zone just after dark and medium sized black pit bull type dog shot out the ditch immediately in front of me. Picture Dark Night, Black Road, Black Dog. I had absolutely no time to even try to avoid him and hit the dog straight on. This happened before I could even react as I never had the chance to even hit the brake it was that fast. My assumption after relooking at the scene in the day light is that the dog either got locked up in the front wheel or pinched in front of it causing the tire to skid. I actually had to walk back to make sure it was a dog. I was sliding down the road before I even registered exactly what happened. I am ok thanks to my leather jacket but the dog died and the bike is a bit messed up as it slide about 30ft and then into the ditch. Looks like front fender, engine guard and handle bars, and left side hard bag. The bike is a immaculate 03 Road King with the Custom Harley Paint Job #43/100.

My Main question is how does the insurance handle the paint being its a custom numbered HD paint job? Does the dealer send it back to HD to be replaced/repainted? Anyone have experience with having to have a HD custom numbered paint job fixed?

Any words of wisdom are appreciated.

I've been told that the dealership can send it back and get it repainted, but never by anybody I'd say knows for sure.

I'm interested in knowing as well. Not that I ever want to use that service... but it would be nice to know.

Glad to hear you are alright, too bad about the dog though. Good luck getting your bike back in working order.

glad your ok, Usually with a small to medium dog you would roll right over them. Sounds like you were going just slow enough that momentum didn't get you over the dog. Its not the damn dog its the damn owners fault. The dog lost its life and you crashed your bike due to stupid owners. Some insurance companies require special riders for one off custom stuff, including paint. I hope its the dog owners who are making this right? Sorry to hear this.

Did the dog have tags? Can you identify the owner? If so, go after them real hard! Animal owners ARE responsible for the damage caused by their pets. If some moron decides to let his dog run free - and the dog causes a wreck, the owner is reasponisble! Too bad the dog got killed instead of the irresponsible owner. Glad you are okay. Bike can be fixed (hopefully at the expense of the dog's owner!)

The home owner's insurance of the dog owner should cover your accident. You can turn it into your insurance company and they will go after the owner.
