and what exactly would you have the cops or "INS" do about this? deport the dead dog? It was probably an American dog that died doing what dogs do

You'd be happily surprised at how close a good paint shop can match your 'custom one of a kind paint scheme.' We live in the computer world, and paint shops can match just about any paint color where the human eye can't tell the difference.
Get the parts from Harley. Then check around for a good painter and get your bike fixed.

Hey, Don't sweat the bike, or the sheet metal. You had no major injuries, your a very lucky soul.
Sheet metal can be cut, sanded, painted or replaced, a crooked butt is hard to straighten back up!
Just give thanks that your OK and make notes of the rest of it, in your "Lessons in Life" book!

Glad you walked away and you had some gear on.

glad your ok, Usually with a small to medium dog you would roll right over them. Sounds like you were going just slow enough that momentum didn't get you over the dog. Its not the damn dog its the damn owners fault. The dog lost its life and you crashed your bike due to stupid owners. Some insurance companies require special riders for one off custom stuff, including paint. I hope its the dog owners who are making this right? Sorry to hear this.

I appreciate everyone's response and well wishes. I will update as thing progress. Just dropped it off at the dealer HD of North Texas of 35 yesterday. They seem pretty sharp. Zac the service insurance guy said they more than likely have to send it back to HD for repaint (might have to do the whole thing because it has a mottled silver finish on the top of the hard bags and fenders) Said probably 8-12 week turn-around. The dog had no tags and it was in an area that is mainly migrant works from south of the border. Even the cops didn't want to get involved because it would probably involve INS. Oh well.. I hope they don't total it cause i love this bike and paint job.

Not all is lost, Insurance reps are trained to throw the minimum number out there at first. Get your info together (examples of what other bikes are selling for in the area, ect...) and bring that to them. Don't be afraid to raise a little hell, and when you start talking about involving lawyers, you'll be surprised how fast that number goes up.
