If the dipstick is in while your are draining the tank usually won't vent and oil won't come out, it creates a vacuum.

He pulled the crankcase plug, easy mistake.

There's a "drains for dummies" photo on the forums here somewhere. I don't have time to look it up for you, so do some searching, then print it out and keep it in your garage. I keep mine stuck in the service manual.

I believe the DPFD photo is of an "A" engine crankcase.
