Well, it happened. My first wreck, and it was a bad one.

I had a friend killed this past summer, same scenario and 40mph. They measured his head hitting pavement at 119' and his wife's at 129'. Because the car was low (Honda civic) they both went over the hood. I myself also had the same thing happen to me this summer at 55mph. I anticipated it (as always) and, although going way off the road and dodging many obstacles, managed to keep it upright. In 25 years of riding it was the only close call I've had. Shook the heck outa me. But you are right, it can happen at any time in a split second. That's why establishing good defensive riding habits are so important. It saved me.

So glad you'll live to ride again. I've been down twice and neither time was my fault. It happens in an INSTANT and is over and done with before you know what the hell happened. So what you're wearing as far as gear, etc is what separates you from minor or moderate to possibly much worse as far as injuries. Both times the helmet saved my life i'm certain of that.
Leather is your best friend, as road rash is a nitemare - painful and heals very slowly.
My leather lined Cortech DSX jeans kept my right buttock from being ground into hamburger in the first crash - did a dismount at 70 mph on the freeway when some idiot side-swiped me doing about 85-90 according to the witness. Landed on the back of my head at 70 mph and slid on my back from 70 to zero mph.
Rest up and keep us posted as to your progress...
