It was either in the late eightys or early ninetys Harley came out with a flyer stating about 94% if the number of parts were counted.
They stated if they made the total bike, the price would of course sky rocket. They would buy American parts if a manufacturer could make them to their specs and price, but the number of parts wouldn't keep a homegrown manufacturer financially solvent alone.

Harley bought the plant that makes cast wheels in Australia.

Harmon Kardon is an American company, but I don't know where they actually make the sound system.

As far as the new American Made leather coats? Read the small print on the adds...the material is coming from overseas.

My lady used to be a seamstress for Levi in Oregon. The jeans came in fully made (she thinks from Mexico), with the exception of the pockets and belt loops, which she stitched on. That qualified them as "American Made." Clothing items made in American territories, also qualify as "American Made." This includes •The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
•Guam
•American Samoa
•The U.S. Virgin Islands
•The Northern Mariana Islands

I think you can also thank the EPA for most of the chroming being done overseas.

When did they start that? Every Showa front end I have ever worked on said "Made in Japan" right on it.

I just looked at an unopened Harmon Kardon headset that came with the Ultra in '06, that is stamped made in American. That surprises me.

So you think, the Moco could buy the same parts made in the USA for the same money as what they are paying for the foreign made parts now, but they just don't want to?
What possible reasons could they have for buying parts made outside the states except for $$$? or they just aren't available in USA?
You think you're paying a premium now. If they made ever piece on our bikes in the states, and took the same percentage markup as they do now, Harleys would be way more money.

As I mentioned earlier, a big reason is the EPA. Back in the 70's, I used to send parts to Florida, to Ocala Plating, for chroming. The plant is now an EPA superfund cleanup site.

Foreign countries, especially China, are not so interested in worker/public safety.
