Default 2011 Harley Davidson VIN Numbers

I just purchased a 2011 FLSTC and have noticed an issue with the VIN. When my dealer sent in the title paperwork, the state sent back a receipt that identified the bike as a 1981. Lojack also has it identified as a 1981, but my Insurance company properly sees it as a 2011. When I put the VIN in any of the "VIN Decoders" online, they all see it as 1981. Is anyone aware of why this is, andif so how do I get this corrected? I live in a state where we have to pay yearly taxes on vehicles, and while a 1981 model will surely save me money on the tag fees, I am sure that other negative issues will hit if this doesn't get taken care of properly.

Man I have never heard of that happening before. Your best bet is to call the dealership you purchased the bike from. They should be in on this to help you. I would also take the vin # you have and compare it to the vin # on your bike just in case they sent the wrong title. This doesn't sound like an easy fix and you may have to talk to someone directly in corporate. Good luck

Can you post the VIN? I'm curious now, the break down should indicate what's up.

The International standardized VIN coding started in 1980. The model year code (10th digit) was A thru Y for 1980 - 2000 and 0-8 for 2001 - 2009. In 2010, the manufacturers started the series over with the letter A. Thus there could be some confusion with a 2010 and a 1980 (A) or a 2011 and a 1981 (B). Clear as mud?

Get it fixed. If your bike ever gets wrecked or stolen, the insurance company is gonna try and pay you for a 1981 model.

Nope...FLSTC is a Heritage Classic. A Softail Custom is a FXSTC. All FX softails were dropped in 2011.
